AN OPEN LETTER TO AFRICAN-AMERICAN LEADERS:

Hi everyone,

You've seen me post excerpts from letters I've received from Fr. Frank Pavone. What many may not be aware of is that Dr. Alveda C. King, niece of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, is a Pastoral Associate of Priests for Life. On the priests for life website, Dr. Alveda C. King has an open letter she wrote to African-American leaders. Following, I post an excerpt from it, with the link to the complete letter on the website. I think that Dr. Alveda King's voice is an important one in the African-American community and needs to be heard far above some like Jesse Jackson who supports abortion. We all need to realise the terrible reality of the holocaust of abortion.

The letter Dr. Alveda King writes begins with the following quote from Dr. Martic Luther King himself.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere…The Negro cannot win if he is willing to sacrifice the lives of his children for personal comfort and safety."
- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This is an open letter to appeal to all people who respect the work, life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. More specifically, it is a wake-up call to the African American community. As a mature, Black, female living in America, my heart weeps every time I hear or see stories about our youth cut down in acts of senseless violence. Time after time, I have asked the question, HOW CAN THE DREAM SURVIVE IF WE MURDER THE CHILDREN?

Dr. Alveda C. King, Pastoral Associate

Obama's pro-death appointments

I received a recent email from Fr. Frank Pavone, Priests for Life, and am posting part of it here.

Dear Friend,

The decision to have Kathleen Sebelius - a militant pro-abortion extremist - be Secretary of Health and Human Services can mean only one thing:

Barack Obama has declared WAR on the youngest members of our human family!

This email is my rallying cry to you as a loyal member of our Priests for Life family! We must defend the lives of our innocent unborn brothers and sisters!

Even as you read this, Priests for Life is working round the clock to rally the people of life to rise up and fight for the unalienable right to life for all Americans ... born and unborn!

We are doing so because every day seems to bring with it a new attack on innocent human life.
Look at what Barack Obama has done in just his first few weeks in office:

Rescinded the "Mexico City policy" and authorized your tax dollars to fund international groups that are promoting abortion around the world.

Begun the process of eliminating the "conscience clause" that protects doctors and nurses from being forced to take part in the crime of abortion.

Expanded human experimentation by increasing federal funding of destructive embryonic stem cell research.

Renewed funding for UNFPA – the United Nations group that helped China carry out its "one child" policy of forced sterilization and forced abortions.

Promised to sign the "Freedom of Choice" Act - which, if it ever were to reach his desk, would undo every pro-life law in all fifty states.

But that's far from all he's done. He's appointing rabid pro-abortion extremists to key positions in the government. The list is long and includes some of the most hard-line pro-abortion fanatics in the country:

Hillary Clinton is Secretary of State.

Kathleen Sebelius, the radical pro-abortion extremist governor of Kansas, has been tapped to be Secretary of Health and Human Services. Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, had this to say about the appointment: "No matter how good Governor Sebelius' record regarding other human life concerns may be, if she is not committed to the safeguarding of human life from its very inception, she should not be entrusted with the questions of health and human services for our nation." Amen to that!

Rahm Emanuel, is Obama's Chief of Staff. He had a 100% pro-abortion rating from NARAL while a member of Congress.

Ellen Moran, the former Executive Director of the pro-abortion group Emily's List is now White House Communications Director.

Melody Barnes, a board member of Emily's List, is Domestic Policy advisor.

Dawn Johnson, a former abortion rights attorney for NARAL, is the Assistant Attorney General for the office of Legal Counsel.

James B. Steinberg, Obama's Deputy Secretary of State, is on record saying that it is unconstitutional to keep your tax dollars from funding abortions.

Nancy-Ann DeParle - an abortion advocate who worked on the Clinton health care plan - will head up the White House Office of Health Care Reform.

David Ogden, our new Deputy Attorney General, represented the interests of pornographers over the protection of children.

Our Lord told us that "by their fruits you will know them."

We're seeing the anti-life fruit of Barack Obama ... and it is rotten to the core!

But what else would you expect from the man who - not once but three times - voted to block legislation that would save the life of a child born alive in a botched abortion!

We must not abandon our unborn brothers and sisters in this their hour of greatest need!

But let me warn you. That commitment will require you to make sacrifices and give of yourself for the sake of the youngest members of our human family. You may have to ...

... give up a Saturday morning to pray outside a local abortion clinic;
... or spend time helping your church’s pro-life group organize an activity;
... or meet with your priest or pastor and challenge him to preach against the evil of abortion;
... or confront a family member who is pro-abortion.

As you can see, I wasn’t kidding when I told you that your commitment today will force you to take risks. But DO NOT BE AFRAID!!! God will be with you!!!

Now that Barack Obama has declared war on the most defenseless members of our human family, we need to use all of our resources to sound the alarm, mobilize the people of life, energize our clergy members, and lead the pro-life forces to victory over abortion!
Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Frank Pavone National Director, Priests for Life and Gospel of Life Ministries

PS One more thing you can do for your unborn brothers and sisters is this: PRAY for President Obama. God seeks the hearts of everyone, that they may turn to him and live! Pray for the conversion of our President. Ask the Holy Spirit to enkindle the fire of His love in the heart of Barack Obama. God bless.

FightFOCA: Congressman says FOCA is coming

Today I received this email from AUL (Americans United for Life), with an important update about the dreaded FOCA. Please read and join the mail list.

Pro-abortion forces were saying that while the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) was important, it was no longer among their top priorities. Instead they were going to start with working to get our tax dollars to pay for abortion here in the United States as well as in countries around the world.

We call this strategy FOCA “by-stealth.”

But now, a staffer for staunchly pro-abortion Congressman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,

"[FOCA] is among the congressman's priorities. We expect to reintroduce it sooner rather than later."

Because you signed the FightFOCA petition and are on the FightFOCA mailing list, taking action when needed, we have been able to delay FOCA and make President Obama break his promise that FOCA would be “the first thing” he would sign as President.
But, while we wait for Congressman Nadler and his allies to bring FOCA forward, I need you to be a part of other battles we are already fighting.
As you may know, FightFOCA is just one project of
AUL Action, the legislative arm of Americans United for Life, the first national prolife organization in the country. Our vision is a nation in which everyone is welcomed in life and protected in law.
That means that we don’t just focus on fighting FOCA. We also work to pass pro-life laws in Congress and in state capitols across the nation. And, in addition to opposing abortion, we also help defend human life by fighting physician assisted suicide, working to ban human cloning and destructive embryo research, protecting pro-life healthcare workers from discrimination, and more.

When I recently appeared on Governor Mike Huckabee’s FOX News show, he called us “the premier pro-life organization in America.”
In order for us to both fight FOCA and build more protections for human life in the law, I need you to join our broader email list -- AUL & AUL Action’s Whole Life Action Team.

It is clear that FOCA is a danger!

Hi friends in the Pro-Life movement. I received this email from Fr. Frank Pavone, and am posting a portion of it here. It is very important to know what's going on and to take action when and where we can. God Bless and the peace of Christ be with you and yours.

Fr. Pavone writes:

Abortion supporters aren't trying to pass the Freedom of Choice Act in one fell swoop.
Their plan is to break it into pieces and pass it incrementally.

And the recent proposal to make taxpayer funding of "family planning" part of the economic stimulus package shows, we were right. Although not specifically part of FOCA, "family planning" is a key element in the plan to enshrine abortion-on-demand as the law of the land for generations to come.

Make no mistake. The only reason federal funding for "family planning" was removed from the stimulus bill was due to the massive outcry of protest from you and your fellow pro-life activists.

That in itself demonstrates what the people of life can do when we make our voice heard in Washington! Which is why I've sent you this important letter.

As you know only too well, the Freedom of Choice Act threatens to abolish that fundamental right to life. A quick reading of the bill as it was introduced in the last Congress proves it. Here are three of its most dangerous provisions:

Section 4 (a) states: "It is the policy of the United States that every woman has the fundamental right to choose to bear a child, to terminate a pregnancy prior to fetal viability, or to terminate a pregnancy after fetal viability when necessary to protect the life or health of the woman."

NOTE: That means abortion-on-demand!

Section 4 (b)(2) adds that "the government may not discriminate against the exercise of the rights set forth in paragraph (1) in the regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services, or information."

NOTE: This is the section that will do away with so-called "obstacles" to abortion ... namely, parental notification ... informed consent ... waiting periods ... ultrasound requirements ... and a host of other state laws.

Section 6: This Act applies to every Federal, State, and local statute, ordinance, regulation, administrative order, decision, policy, practice, or other action enacted, adopted, or implemented before, on, or after the date of enactment of this Act.

NOTE: This is the section that will be used to undo every pro-life provision in every state in the Union.

The nonpartisan Congressional Research Service (part of the Library of Congress) put together a summary stating that FOCA:

Prohibits a federal, state, or local governmental entity from: (1) denying or interfering with a woman's right to exercise such choices (NOTE: the "choices" are the three mentioned in Sect 4 (a) above) ; or (2) discriminating against the exercise of those rights in the regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services, or information.

From all this you can see why everyone is so fired up to keep FOCA from passing. Its abortion-on-demand language is far too radical for the vast majority of Americans to accept.
And those promoting the abortion agenda know it.

So rather than call attention to FOCA's extremist provisions, pro-abortion lawmakers in Congress will break FOCA into pieces and try to sneak them into law one section at a time. They will attach them to other legislation ... like they tried to do when they attached the federal funding of "family planning" programs to the economic stimulus bill.

But the reaction of our pro-life movement was swift and vocal.

So much so that the "family planning" proposal was quickly removed from the bill.

This makes two things crystal clear:

1. The leadership of Congress is going to use the current economic crisis to advance their anti-life agenda. And since passing the Freedom of Choice Act is one of their primary objectives, they will do whatever it takes to achieve that goal ... even if it means getting FOCA passed one section at a time as I noted above.

2. The people of life have the strength and political muscle to block that agenda ... if we rise up and make our voices heard.

The pro-abortion lawmakers who control Congress are arrogant elitists.

They are so smug in their new-found power that they believe they can steamroll the people of life because they are confident that when push comes to shove on the economy, the majority of our fellow Americans care more about themselves and their pocketbooks than they do about the youngest members of our human family.

Well, they may be right about many of our fellow Americans.

But they are 100% wrong about you and me and the people of life!

We will never abandon our unborn brothers and sisters!

And we will do everything in our power to awaken our fellow Americans and make them see the truth that abortion corrupts our whole society and retards progress on all the other issues that concern them ... including the economy!

That truth can be summarized in these words of Mother Teresa:

"It is a poverty to decide that a child must dieso that you may live as you wish."

Mark my words. We will not end legalized abortion-on-demand in our country until we engrave those words on the hearts of our fellow Americans. As we work round the clock to make that happen ...

... we must also maintain our vigilance over the political process lest the enemy catch us napping.

Whenever the abortion forces try to sneak a part of FOCA through Congress, we must sound the alarm and rally the people of life to rise up and stop them ... like with did with the anti-life proposal to use federal tax dollars to fund "family planning" programs.

In order for us to take on that vital role every means of our vast communications network must be fully funded and fully operational. These include:

Television: Most especially - (1) Our "Defending Life" series on EWTN, (2) The homilies I preach while celebrating Mass at EWTN, and (3) Our weekly "Gospel of Life" TV show on Sky Angel.

Radio: Our team of pastoral associates are on all the Catholic and Christian stations ... and secular talk radio shows, too.

Internet: Right now Priests for Life designs, maintains and updates over a dozen websites! These provide literally hundreds of thousands of readers information about our own activities as well as work that other pro-life organizations are doing.

Email: Instant communication with tens of thousands of pro-life activists.

Teleconferences: Key strategy sessions with pro-life leaders and activists.

Publications: My bi-weekly pro-life column ... editorials ... blog postings.

Pro-life conferences: Members of our pastoral team are constantly on the road giving pro-life talks and rallying the people of life to take to the streets.

Churches: We provide liturgical resources and other important pro-life material to priests and pastors of all denominations. And remember, each member of the clergy who preaches the Gospel of Life reaches thousands of people!!

That's the vast communications machinery we need to keep in full operation so that when the enemy tries to sneak a section of FOCA into another piece of legislation, we can sound the alarm and lead the people of life to rise up and stop it!

PS House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's unconscionable reasoning for why taxpayers need to pay for "family planning" shows you the kind of elitist thinking we're fighting. According to Speaker Pelosi and her crowd, babies are a drain on the economy because states have to pay for the health care and education of poor children. What gall! Babies are precious gifts from God. And we've got to protect them from callous elitists like Nancy Pelosi. Please, with a committed abortion advocate in the White House and abortion apologists like Pelosi in control of Congress, we've got to be vigilant and rally all pro-life Americans to rise up, speak out and defend the youngest members of our human family. And with your help today, Priests for Life will lead that fight!

Abortion Battle. Sen. Coburn: Will fight President Obama over 'conscience' clause

As much as President Obama claims to support freedom of choice, it seems that freedom of choice to him and others like him doesn't apply to people who cherish the lives of the pre-born children in the womb.

"... president Obama better get ready for a fight on his plans to overturn yet another decision by the book Bush Administration. The president wants to change the so called conscience rule for health care workers. That rule provides additional protection for doctors and others who refuse to perform procedures like abortions. And other procedures based on their religious beliefs."

God's merciful love for those who have been involved in abortion and His desire to forgive and heal.

As those who follow this blog know, I try to help bring to public attention the horror of abortion. I also want to remind those who see this blog, especially women who have had abortions and are hurting because of it, that God still loves you so very much and He wants to heal you. So don't despair, because God's mercy is for you. Just reach out to Him and ask Him for forgiveness and to heal you. There are people also you can go to who are there to help people hurt by abortion to find reconciliaiton and healing.

One such organization is called Rachel's Vineyard. At Rachel's Vineyard there are weekends for healing after abortion that are offered throughout the year in locations across the United States and Canada, with additional sites internationally. For more information please go to: http://www.rachelsvineyard.org/

For women who are pregnant and don't know what to do, and are considering having an abortion, I want to tell you that there are alternatives. You don't have to be alone in this, and no one at all ever has the right to force you into an abortion... not even your own parents.

If you are thinking of having an abortion for any reason at all, please know that it isn't going to help, however convenient or sensible it may seem right now, and there is an enormous number of women out there who have had abortions who will tell you the same thing. There are options to abortion. The following link takes you to a website that provides information about abortion, pregnancy tests, STD's, adoption, parenting, medical referrals, housing, and many other issues. The toll-free number is available to callers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Ashley Judd in ad attacks Sarah Palin. Accusation of "senseless slaughter" of wolves. Call to the left to wake up to the slaughter of unborn babies

In an ad by the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, Ashley Judd gives her voice to an accusation against Sarah Palin which claims that she promotes what the ad calls a "cruel, unscientific and senseless practice." The ad is referring to the predator control programs meant to protect vulnerable wildlife such as moose and caribou which native populations in most of the small villages in Alaska depend on to feed their families. As Sarah Palin said in a statement made February 3, 2009, in response to attacks by the Defenders of Wildlife, the ad campaign "distorts the facts about Alaska’s wildlife management programs. Alaskans depend on wildlife for food and cultural practices which can’t be sustained when predators are allowed to decimate moose and caribou populations."

The fact is that wolves and bears are quite efficient at hunting moose and caribou, and when left on their own, the wolves drive the moose and caribou populations down. If that is allowed to continue un-checked, the Eskimos can't catch enough fish to sustain themselves. I asked a woman I know who herself is an Inupiat (Eskimo) if she had heard about these things and she said: "we been hearing this for days.. i think sarah made a good choice.. there is alot of wolves killing off moose and caribou all over the state."

Now I'm aware that one of the causes many in the liberal circles agree on, are the rights of Native Americas, including I would think, the Inupiat of Alaska. I for one am a supporter of American Indian rights and believe strongly that amends have not fully been made for wrongs done to them. I certainly believe it would be wrong to ignore them now, which I think people like Ashley Judd and those at the Defenders of Wildlife Campaign are doing, whether consciously or without awareness of the plight of the Eskimos. Perhaps they don't realise what all is at stake here, and I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt. But the fact is that hunting is an important part of their lives, and should be protected, and that is something that Alaska’s wildlife management programs do. As for the charge that it is unscientific, Alaska Game & Fish Deptartment biologists use scientific principles in the design and implementation of the predator control plan. As Sarah Palin also said in her response to the ad, "Our predator control programs are scientific and successful at protecting vulnerable wildlife." Presumably, the left won't buy that, and will continue to use whatever means they can to smear anything

If you're wondering at this point what this post has to do with Pro-Life issues, I will now point out again how Ashley Judd, in the ad against Sarah Palin called the killing of the wolves a "cruel" and "senseless practice", and a "horrific program" in which the wolves "die a brutal death." How I wish that she and other celebrities would aim such words at the holocaust of abortion, where in America alone, thousands of babies are slaughtered every day by the "senseless practice" of abortion which is a most "cruel" and "horrific program" which pro-abortion activists insist is a "right."

I Thought You Should Know, By Bishop Robert J. Hermann - Auxiliary Bishop Archdiocese of St. Louis, MO

Following is an article from the Priests for Life website, posted here with kind permission. (Emphasis mine)

January 27, 2009

I was very edified this past Saturday to see the Cathedral almost filled for the Pro-Life Mass. Then to see such a large contingent, on a very cold day, make a pilgrimage to the abortion clinic, praying the Rosary for Life, was truly heartwarming.

At the very moment I am writing this, our new president, Barack Obama, is being sworn into office. We congratulate him, and we pray for him, but we cannot condone his pro-death policies, even while we are happy that so many people feel they have new hope. We must do everything we can to oppose his pro-death-to-children efforts.

Joseph Bottum, in an article entitled "Abortion after Obama," writing in the January 2009 edition of First Things, pages 13-15, tells us, "Now the 2008 election has brought us the presidency of Barack Obama, the most consistent supporter of legalized abortion ever nominated by a majority party."

When asked about making decisions as to when a baby gets human rights, President Obama answered that "is above my pay grade." He also stated that he would not want his daughters "punished with a baby."

He has made it known that, upon taking office, he will remove all federal restrictions on funding embryonic stem-cell research. He also intends to sign the Freedom of Choice Act. Seldom has our nation ever been confronted with such an extreme measure. The Freedom of Choice Act will invalidate for the entire country all restrictions on abortion before viability, including parental notification, waiting periods and partial-birth abortion bans. President Obama has no problem supporting legislation that would even kill a child who survived a botched abortion.

If at this stage our anger is directed at President Obama, our anger is misdirected. Obama is not the enemy. He needs and deserves our prayers, not our condemnation.

As Catholics, we are not guiltless. It seems to me that when President Kennedy compromised Catholic teachings and accommodated political pressures in order to be elected to the highest office in the land, he set the tone for many Catholic leaders to follow and to compromise their Catholic principles to get ahead.

In our Supreme Court and in our Congress, we have a plethora of so-called Catholics who are failing to live their Catholic identity. Over 50 percent of our electorate voted for a president who is one of the most pro-culture-of-death candidates from a major party to run for the highest office of the land.

Yes, we can thank one-half of our Catholics for bailing out on their faith!

After almost 50 years of having 50 percent of Catholics abandoning their Catholic identity, we cannot expect to turn this culture around by short-term political efforts.

In order to bring about a transformation from a culture of death to a culture of life, we have to restore our Catholic identity.

This means that all of us, as Catholics, have to undergo a profound transformation. It means that we have to take a good look at every facet of our Catholic life, including the serious study of life issues, the regular and devout use of our Sacramental system, especially the devout and weekly attendance at Mass, the regular reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the devout praying of the daily Rosary, and then the faithful, loving and firm witness to lax Catholics about our Catholic beliefs and practices.

We have to live our lives in such a way that we will be unafraid to witness to what we believe and live.

I may courageously say that I am willing to die to end abortion, but am I equally willing to say that I am ready to let my ego get ruffled daily for the same cause? Yet … that is where I need to arrive if I am to be a credible witness.

What a glorious opportunity we all have to make a difference in the pro-life cause. Until we are willing to be politically incorrect in order to be biblically correct, we will never convince anyone that our religion is worth living.

It does not take 100 percent of our Catholics to transform this country. If 75 percent of our Catholics were steeped in Catholic identity, the abortion issue would be over for our entire country. We have many, many evangelicals on our side in the culture of life. Look at how many more of them would flock to our side if we really lived our Catholic teachings! They, too, are looking for changeless principles lived out in practice.

But there is more! Our laxity in living our Catholic life has blinded us into not seeing the role of Satan in the culture of death. Satan is having a heyday in our midst, because he has managed to remain invisible in the culture of death, and our laxity has granted him that luxury. Since we are not steeped in the Word of God as we should be, we do not recognize his darkness in our society. Our first reading from Hebrews tells us, "The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart."

St. Paul tells us that our warfare is not against flesh and blood but against the power and principles of darkness. He also tells us that we should not let the sun go down upon our anger so as to give Satan a foothold. These readings are wake-up calls for us all. I bring this up deliberately, because I do not want us to fall into Satan's trap of getting us to hate President Obama or any of the pro-choice Catholic legislators in Congress. Being pro-life means that we engage far more in spiritual warfare than in political warfare.

That Satan is very alive in influencing all of us is his best-kept secret. Becoming steeped in the Word of God and the teachings of the Catholic Church exposes his evil machinations.

President Obama, pro-choice legislators and Planned Parenthood are not our enemies. Our enemies are the invisible forces masked behind these people. Most of them do not have a clue that they are being deceived by our common enemy, the devil. They are used by our common enemy, Satan, and his evil forces, to get us to hate so that we, too, will end up in a culture of death. President Obama and all pro-choice and pro-abortion legislators, as well as members supporting Planned Parenthood (and we have in our own state a national legislator who has received over $900,000 from groups that advocate for abortion rights) — these are not our enemies. They are used by the evil one to get us to hate them in our efforts to be pro-life and thereby ditch our pro-life efforts. We cannot fall for that trap!

We owe all of them prayers and fasting for their conversion. At one point, Gov. Reagan was California's very pro-abortion governor. Yet he became a very pro-life president. He repented and regretted the evil he supported.

We must bravely witness against supporting pro-choice and pro-abortion candidates in political elections, but pray daily for their conversion
